2

Job 3. Title: Northern pike habitat utilization

Objective: To determine relative habitat utilization and preferences of adult
northern pike versus Colorado squawfish in the Yampa River during
pre-runoff, runoff, and post-runoff flow regimes.

Job 6. Title: Standardized monitoring surveys

Objectives:

1) Determine trends in the populations of the endangered fishes;
2) Develop empirical models that aid our understanding of the environmental
variables that affect these population trends;
3) Determine the efficacy of management actions intended to aid in recovery
of the species; and
4) Assist in establishment of definitive recovery goals.

"

Job 7. Title: Razorback sucker inventory above Palisade

Objective: To determine the presence and distribution of razorback sucker in the
Colorado River between the Grand Valley Diversion Dam and Parachute,
Colorado.

Job 8. Title: Colorado squawfish sportfishery in Kenney Reservoir

Objective: To evaluate Colorado squawfish as sportfish in Kenney Reservoir.

METHODS

Job 1. Title: Gamefish species life history data

Sampling was conducted in spring backwaters in the Yampa River from Apri1-
June, 1991. Collections of northern pike and channel catfish were used for
population characteristics, spawning ecology, distribution, habitat selection,
movements, presence of endangered species. Methods used were similar to those
reported in Nesler (1991). Northern pike and channel catfish were removed from
spring backwater habitat to observe responses in use of this habitat type by
Colorado squawfish and other fish species. Eight, I-week trips were made,
covering from river km (RK) 188-72.

Job 2. Title: Gamefish predation upon endangered fishes

Northern pike and channel catfish collected during sampling trips scheduled
in Job 1 on the Yarnpa River were processed for stomach content analysis of fish
species ingested. Gape measurements for northern pike and channel catfish, and
body depth-width measurements for associated species were also collected to
establish potential vulnerability to predation by pike and catfish.

In the Colorado River, two one-week trips were made in July 1991. Two
backwaters were selected for daytime sampling Qf centrarchid predators and
