10

In 1992, 30 seine samples were collected from 15 backwater habitats in the
same reach. These samples have yet to be processed.

Spring electrofishing

Numbers of adult Colorado squawfish collected in the three Colorado rivers
confirmed the fluctuating trend established from 1986 to 1990. Above average
catches were observed for both the Yampa and Colorado rivers in 1991, followed by
much lower numbers caught in 1992 (Table 1). The pattern in the White River was
opposite. These patterns were also reflected in the catch rates. Considering
the small numbers of fish sampled, no remarkable change was noted in the size
range. The numbers of adult fish captured or observed in the Yampa River from
1986 to 1992 demonstrate a fluctuating pattern with no discernab1e trend over the
6-year period (Fig. 3). The patterns for both the White and Colorado rivers
suggest increasing trends. Comparison of length ranges for 1992 samples with
length frequency distributions for each river from 1986 to 1991 in McAda (1991)
do not indicate any trends toward loss of larger, and presumably older, fish, or
the influx of smaller, and presumably younger, fish.

Table 1.
