winter ice~on period from November through March, pike tended to remain in a
specific RM location in a specific habitat type, often in the same pool in
which they were initially captured (Table 5). Nineteen of the radio-tagged
pike demonstrated this characteristic during the baseflow and winter ice-on
seasons. In 76% of all observations, tagged pike had moved an average of only
0.15 miles from their previous location (range 0.0-0.7 mi). During winter
observations of these fish, though, they were often quite active, moving
around within the pool or backwater. Observations of changes in RM location
occurred primarily in the spring following ice-off, or sometime between the
fall base flow period and ice-on. Spring movement ranged from 0.9-26.1 miles
and averaged 4.4 miles. In the Maybell reach (RM 58-90), one pike moved
downstream almost 5 miles from a backwater/pool at RM 81.1 to another major
pool at RM 76.2 between March 4 and September 23, 1987, returned to the
original upstream backwater/pool by November 17, 1987, and then moved 7.1
miles further upstream to the Lay Cr. confluence by April 8, 1988. Another
pike remained at RM 80.8-81.1 throughout the October 1986 to March 1987
period, then was recaptured by an angler 7 miles upstream at the Lay Creek.
confluence in May 1987. A third pike remained at a pool under the Maybe11
bridge at RM 79.3 from August 1987 through March 1987, then was relocated 26
miles downstream in May 1987 in the Lilly Park reach. Two other pike radio
tagged in the Lilly Park reach at the Wheeler Bend pool (RM 53.4) remained in
this area from September 1987 to April 1988. On April 24 both fish were
located 2 miles downstream at two backwaters above the old confluence site of
the Little Snake River. One of these fish, a large female, was recaptured
during block and shock sampling. Upon its subsequent release, this fish moved

.
downstream and was relocated in a mainchannel eddy 2 miles downstream one hour
later.

27
