28

II. B.

To ~elate YOY squawfish production and survival in the Yampa River
and YOY survival in the Green River with the natural ~ange of
therm2l.1 and flow ~egi mes observed, and determi ne an opti mal range
of combin.ations.

C. To dete~mine the existence and nature of imprinting 1n squawfish
stocks originating in Yampa Canyon.

III. Species interactions objectives:

A. To determine the population dynamics of fish species involved in
p!~edator-prey interactions with Colorado squawfish with respect
to relative abundance, size-age structure, spawning ecology, and
manipulative management potential of these species.

B. To determine the primary forage fish species or species
assemblages utilized by Colorado squawfish, and the degree of
substitution between fluctuating prey stocks.

IV. Hatchery-raised fish objectives:

A. To determine the survivability of yay and juvenile Colo~ado
squawfish in rive~ reaches with and without wild stocks, and
assess the potential of hatchery fish to supplement wild stocks
or ~ecolonize and expand in vacant river habitats within their
native range.

B. To determine imprinting and homing capabilities and migratory
behavior in hatchery-raised squawfish with regard to
establishing self-sustaining populations in natural river
envir-onments.

C. To determine the genetic distinction of Upper Basin wild stocks
from Lower Basin hatchery stocks of Colorado squawfish.

D. To determine the genetic distinction between stocks of Colorado
squawfish in the Colorado, Yampa-Green, White, and Gunnison
rivers.

V. Management-oriented objectives:

A. To determine the significance of fishing mortality upon squawfish
populations in the Colorado and Yampa rivers.

B. To determine 1T wild and/or hatchery-raised squawfish will use
bidirectional fish barrier passage devices during spawning
migrations or other long distance movements.
