I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I am indebted to numerous people who, over the course of the past six years, have

helped me realize the goals of this dissertation. I owe a big debt of thanks to Dr. W.L.

Minckley for helping me survive the first two, and most difficult, years of the program.

Without his help I am sure I would not have remained in the program. Since that time he

has further offered valuable insight at all stages of my dissertation. I am sure my writing

and thinking skills have been improved greatly by his guidance. The rest of my

committee Paul Marsh, Stan Faeth, Jeff Hazel, Michael Douglas, and except for the final

semester, Jim Elser all provided equally valuable assistance. Paul Marsh, due to office

politics, was only officially added as a committee member near the end. Prior to that

time he was instrumental in obtaining funding to cover my assistantship and to pay for

laboratory and field work. He further provided valued assistance on several side projects

and was a good friend throughout.

I was employed full-time by the Bureau of Rec1amation during the last three and

one-half years of my graduate career and wish to thank those responsible for making it

possible for me to continue with my graduate work. While in Boulder City, Nevada, Bill

Rinne and my supervisor, Tom Shrader, provided constant encouragement. Upon

transferring to Denver, Colorado, Jim LaBounty allowed me substantial amounts of time

to complete writing of my dissertation. He constantly goaded me to get the dissertation
completed as soon as possible.

I must also thank my parents Peter and Helen for having supported me all these

years.

VI
