.

.

.

IMPLANTATION PROCEDURE USED ON COLORADOSQUAWFISH

.

The following procedure was developed with the aid of a number of individ-
uals. It is therefore a compendium of ideas and methods. The various protions
were thoroughly tested beforehand on a number of fishes, including flannelmouth
suckers, carp, walleye, and Utah suckers. Tests were conducted both in. labora-
tory and field situations.
1. Surgical instruments were sterilized in zepharynchloride. Rubber
gloves were worn during the surgery.
2. The fish were anesthesized in 50 mg/l of tricaine methanesulfonate
(MS-222) .
3. The fish was then placed ori a padded V-shaped board and covered
with wet towels. The fish's body was bathed with water and its
gills bathed with anesthetic during the surgery.
4. The incision area, the ventral midline of the abdomen, was swabbed
with 70% alcohol.
5. A midline 50 mm incision was made anterior to the pelvic girdle.
6. A transmitter, sterilized in 70% alcohol, was inserted into the
abdominal cavity using forceps, rounded end first. The transmitter
was gently pushed posteriorly under the pelvic girdle, and the wound
was sprinkled with sulfa.
The incision was sutured with a continuous stitch, with knots in

7.

.

.

.

.

.

.

both ends.

28

.
