f
f
I

~.

6

Fishes

Table 3 indicates the species of fish found at each of the sampling
stations. Few fish were found in March, primarily because very few
were caught with the seines. Apparently, cold temperatures (river
temperatures were 1-30C) cause most of the species present to become
inactive and return to deep water. Seining of shorelines and shallow
areas usually produced nothing. The most active species were the trout,

carp, speckled dace, and mottled sculpins.
In general, June samples contained more species (Table 3) and
also more individual fish than the March samples. This was primarily

due to the increased catch with seines. Sampling with seines in and

below the Yampa River was hampered by high June flows which caused
much of the river to be too deep for seining. Therefore, it is antici-

pated that the species list may grow in July and August samples. Spe-
cies collected to date include all the common forms collected by

Vanicek, Kramer and Franklin (1970) and Holden and Stalnaker (1975a
and b).

A new species for Dinosaur National Monument was recorded when

we seined a northern pike from Echo Park on June 12. To our knowledge,
this is only the second northern ever recorded from the Green River.
Also, collection of the sand shiner in the Green River at Echo Park

is a downstream range extension for this species. It was found last

year at Boxelder Park on the Yampa and is most abundant in the upper
Yampa area (personal communication, Karl Seethaler, Logan, Utah).
