10

the Yampa River, showed a considerable increase in species present, re-

fleeting warmer flows and nearness to a source of fishes. Echo Park
produced the greatest number of species. Here both warm and cold water
species were found, as well as species most common in the Yampa River.
Abundance of fishes, although not tabulated for this report,
also increased dramatically in the stations in and below the mouth of
the Yampa River. This is probably a reflection of greater spawning

success in the warmer water of the Yampa and the lower spawning poten-
tial of the Green River.

Rare fishes found to date have been razorback suckers in the lower

Yampa and Island Park, and squawfish in Island Park. No small rare
- fish indicative of reproduction have been found above Jensen, although
one Age II squawfish was collected at Jensen in June.

REMAINING INVESTIGATION, 1978

Additional 1978 samples at the Green River stations will be taken
in July, August, and October. The July sample was added to the original
schedule to obtain more ,lIbeforell data. Sampling in the Yampa River will

occur in August and October.
