pollution, food web changes and accelerated sedimentation. These phenomena can
be used as benchmarks that integrate the environmental health of the catchment if the
data are gathered systematically over long periods. Analysis of trends in such data can
reveal how leaky or unconnected the system may be and provide clear insights where
management actions can be effective in reconnecting the system. This effort can best
be accommodated by insightful, integrated management.
