canyons to gain a view of the surrounding terrain and also explored
most of the Colorado r s tributaries. Kany formations bear today the
names bestowed on them by Major Powell: Flaming Gorge, Horseshoe Can-

yon, Karble Canyon, Glen Canyon, to name but a few.

Powell. was one of the first men to recognize the potential of the

land drained by the Colorado and to predict the future stri.fe in har-
