<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />were preserved in sufficient buffered formalin to yield a 5 percent <br />concentration. <br /> <br />Samples for benthic invertebrates were collected with an 0.0232 m2 <br />(15 x 15 cm) Ekman sampler and screened in a 600 ~m mesh littoral bucket. <br />Duplicate samples were collected in the main river and in each backwater <br />sampled. Samples were preserved for subsequent laboratory identification <br />and enumeration with sufficient buffered formalin to yield a final <br />concentration of 5-10 percent. <br /> <br />Mapping of backwaters was undertaken to determine their size and if <br />possible to relate size to limnological characteristics and attributes <br />of these backwaters. Length of the backwater was measured. Two to <br />five transects were then established to determine width, and depth <br />was measured at several points along the transect. This information <br />was used to estimate area and volume of backwaters. Continuous recording <br />of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance in one <br />backwater per location was done with a calibrated multiparameter data-recording <br />probe set to record every 60 minutes. The data collected were later <br />dumped to a computer in the laboratory for analysis. <br /> <br />9 <br />
