Samples were preserved for subsequent laboratory identification
and enumeration with sufficient buffered formalin to yield a final
concentration of 5-10 percent.

Mapping of backwaters was undertaken to determine their size and if
possible to relate size to limnological characteristics and attributes
of these backwaters. Length of the backwater was measured. Two to
five transects were then established to determine width, and depth
was measured at several points along the transect. This information
was used to estimate area and volume of backwaters. Continuous recording
of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance in one
backwater per location was done with a calibrated multiparameter data-recording
probe set to record every 60 minutes. The data collected were later
dumped to a computer in the laboratory for analysis.

9
