The mainstem
dam, designed with hypolimnetic release, was canpleted. and began immdating
Kenney Reservoir basin in October 1985. The White River fran the Yellow Creek
Confluence to the Colorado/Utah state line (45 kIn above to 51 kIn below the dam
axis) has been sampled for Colorado squawfish by electrofishing. ~bre inten-
sive fish s,unpling has been conducted in the 8 km above and the 8 kIn below the
reservoir basin. larval' fish have been sampled from 24 kIn above the dmn to the
stateline. Thirteen fish species have been collected (seven native, sbc non-
nati ve) with six species represented in' larval samples (four native 1 two non-
native); however, no larval squawfish have been found. A total of 23 adult and
juvenile Colorado squawfish were captured prior to impoundment in 1983 (11) and
1984 (12) of which four and five, respectively, were surgically implanted. with
radiotransmitters. Radiotelane1:ry shows lIDvanent down the White River with
several indi victuals lIDving up the Green River. One specirren, radiotagged in
1983, was lIDnitored and recaptured in the Yampa River in 1984. Pre-impound-
rrent electrofishing samples in 1983 and 1984 above and below the dam axis were
daninated by native flannelIrouth suckers (Catostams latipinnis), roundtail
chubs (Gila robusta), and bluehead ~llckers (C. discobolus) in order of abun-
dance. Initial 1985 post-impoundment electrofishing below the dam shows dani-
nance by recently stocked rainbow trout (SalIro gairclneri), and an increased
abundance of bluehead. suckers and rountail chubs. Non-native red shiners
(Notropis lutrensis) and fathead minnO\vs (Pi..rrephelas pranelas) , comprising
small percentages in 1983 and 1984 pre-impoundment seine samples, dc.:minate
1985 shallow water collections below the dam. . ~bvements of non-endangered
fishes _230 mn TL has been studied by tagging over 3000 fish representing
fi ve species. Recaptures indicate low net lIDvement suggesting an affinity
for a hane range.

\

145

ffO(, ltv. A~5iX
(.16 ~~q~.
6l;; (IQg5')
