PRELIMINARY CONCLUSIONS

Preliminary conclusions derived from the data reported in this document are:
1. Peak discharge for 1996 was similar to that of 1993; however, recession from
the 1996 peak was of longer duration.
2. The general pattern of scour and fill at Ouray for 1993 and 1996 was similar.
3. The response of the primary bank-attached compound bar to the high flows
of 1993 and 1996 was similar, however the complexity of the bar margin was
slightly greater in 1996.
4. Smaller, low-elevation bar complexes were deposited at higher elevation by
the 1996 flood.
5. Channel response to large floods is different at Mineral Bottom. Bank
attached bars are rare and do not significantly aggrade during flood passage.
6. Measurements made in 1996 are the basis for on-going modeling efforts to
predict the effect of floods on a wide range of bar configurations.

14
