STATUS OF GREEN RIVER COLORADO PIKEMINNOW

1377

of Flaming Gorge Dam and a comprehensive program
of nonnative fish removal (Muth et al. 2000; Valdez
and Muth 2005). There is a critical need to evaluate
whether these and other actions benefit endangered
Colorado pikeminnow, work that should be concurrent
with aggressive, science-based management to reduce
immediate threats. Recovery will ultimately require
experimental and long-term monitoring studies, suffi-
cient resources, and a patient and sustained commit-
ment to allow this long-lived species to respond to
appropriate management actions.

Acknowledgments

This study was funded by the Recovery Implemen-
tation Program for Endangered Fish Species in the
Upper Colorado River basin. The program is a joint
effort of the U.s. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S.
Bureau of Reclamation, the Westem Area Power
Administration, the states of Colorado, Utah, and
Wyoming, upper basin water users, environmental
organizations, the Colorado River Energy Distributors
Association, and the National Park Service. Funding
for this research was administered by the Bureau of
Reclamation and the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and
Conservation Biology and the Larval Fish Laboratory
(LFL) at Colorado State University. Project adminis-
tration was facilitated by T. Chart, J. Nusbaum, J.
Sholts, C. Morales, T. Czapla, and R. Muth. We thank
the many property owners who allowed access to their
property and various entities for the collecting and
boating permits needed to accomplish this work. We
also thank the many seasonal and other employees who
participated in field sampling. Utah Division of
Wildlife, Moab, employees who participated in this
project include P.
