Grotesque cathedrals carved from stone thrust up from barren plain.
Goblin shapes and twisted streets burned in the General's brain.
His journal noted sights he'd seen, would others read the entry?
Would others someday brave the wilds, seeking Goblin City?

John Wesley Powell in '69 came exploring with his crew.
Bishop, Steward, and Dellenbaugh followed up the clue.
Five days rations on their backs, hot and tired and dirty,
They braved the roaring sun to stand and gaze on Goblin City.

Then on a raft of cottonwood, they left this land of mystery,
Floating two days back downstream to rendezvous with history.
Somehow, after Powell's trip, someone lost the diary.
In time the very name was lost, along with Goblin City.

A century more the city slept, under desert skies,
'Til a footnote in a history book caught a casual eye.
Then determined souls sought out, with grim tenacity
The hidden clues that held the key to the gates of Goblin City.

They set out in early spring, and Powell's route retraced.
Much the same as Dellenbaugh's the hardships that they faced.
Two days deep in lonely lands, in search of history,
At nightfall sunset lit the form of far-off Goblin City.

Land of towers, land of buttes, brooding lonely in the sun,
Raw rock carved in faery form, cloud shadow overrun,
Eerie vista 'neath full moon, dawn-lit mystery:
Linger on when Man is gone, enchanted Goblin City.

6
