PHYSIOGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY OF WYOMING

A knowledge of the physiography and hydrography of a region is essential to
understanding the distribution of fishes. In Wyoming, altitudinal distribution is
particularly important.
Broadly speaking, the surface features of the state may be classified as
mountains, plains, river valleys or basins, and a single, closed basin, the Great Diy-ide
Basin. The major mountain ranges include the Teton, Absaroka, Wind River, Big
Horn, and the three subdivisions of the Medicine Bow Mountain Range, the
Laramie, Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges. Lesser uplifts include the Black Hills in
the northeastern corner of the state, the Ferris, Rattlesnake, Seminoe, Shirley, and
Owl Creek mountains in central Wyoming, and the Wyoming Range in western
Wyoming. The Uinta Range, in the extreme southwestern corner of the state is
mostly in Utah.

About one-fourth of the area of Wyoming is mountainous. A major part of the
remainder of the state is rolling plains, with a predominant vegetation of sagebrush
in west and central Wyoming and of short grass in the east. The lower elevations in
the state are associated with the river systems outlined below, particularly near the
point where a river leaves the state.
