.......----- .

.

aaipled'the streb se'ctions in'the vicinity ot Split }t)untain Campground
and for a distance dounstream. All specimens taken were preserved for
. J.a,te~ study (Figure 6).. This team which was the largest group used an
electric shocking unit along with gills nets and several sizes of seines.
.tatter sampling intensively for more than four hours, they continued on to
:rs1.and. Park and spent approximately three hours ot intensive sampling in
'tbat. area.

The crew left Island park and traveled at night to Echo Park. The
following morning they spent Shockins and seining the junction areas of
the Green and Yampa Rivers. The afternoon vas spent sampling the station
at Castle Park on the Yampa River.

Crew No. 2 traveled to Echo Park and spent the first full day sampling
_._'t.Ae river in that region. Duplication of effort was intended because of
thatrategiclocation ot Echo Park at the confluence of the Green and
YUIJ& Rivers. Fish populations in this section in 1961'were abundant anA
contained a greater number of species (U of 13 recorded) than any other
-- ,i..D&le station. This crew traveled at night to the Gates ot Lodore and
--Spent the entire second day sampling the river there. A side channel of
the stream where many fish bad been taken previously by Mr. Banks lias
1ntentionally poisoned \lith s. rotenone based poison at a level in excess
of. 2 p.p.m. of toxin (Figure 1)..

...

One crell member of each unit was assiGned the responsibility of taking
-. a1;least tour square foot bottQl!l samples from each station. Larger collec-
tl()!l8 were n9t made because Mr. Banks lias to continue bottom sampling at
a lster date.

Collecting efforts in 1962 were equally as intensive as in 1961..
COtlditlons were much better tor collecting fish in 1962 than they were
'iQ 1961 because the rivers 'llere at the 10vlest point that they bad been tn
several years. If fisb were present they should have been concentrated
and much easier to capture.. In addition to this" the electric generator
which saw only limited use in 1961, lias functioning exceptionally well :i.n
stunning fish.

Total numbers of tish taken in 1962 are listed by station in Table 2.
,1\, vas estimated that about one-half or les8 of the fish stunned a.t Split
'c"Jl:Nnta.1n were recovered. The majority of' the fish not recovered were
Urge carp since the men made every effort to collect a maximum number ot
. mape<:ie8 and would by-pass a large carp if they had to make a choice in
taking it or a fish of another spec ies. The same percentage at recove17
was estimated at Island Park but there, equally as many very large :f'larmel-
mouth suckers were by-passed as were carp. At Echo Park" nearly every fish
turned over was taken. No more than six or possibly ten fish llere seen to
have escaped the nets. Every effort lIaS made to take all the fish encoun-
tered 1n the sampling station at Castle Park on the Yamps. River.
