The Yampa River and its tributaries drain the Jlorthweslern
corner of Colorarb and a little of southwestem 'Wyoming (Fig 2). The YaJlpa
Ri\'er is a major tributary joining the Green River at Echo Park in Dinosaur Na-
tinnal Monument. The Yampa and its major tributary, the Little Snake Hj~'et.,
begin as cold, mountain streams with fine trout fishing, The Yampa contains fa~rlr
poor trout h3bitat helow Craig, Colorado, mainly due to warm summer temperatu~es.
The Little Snake becomes too warm for trout a few miles after it enters Colorbdo
from 'Wyoming. Both rivers are used for irrigation in the fertile valleys they h~ve
formed. ~I
The Yampa system tends to remain clear except after rainstorms and spring r 11-
ofr, differing in this reslleet from the main Green and Colorado Hivers. This pa er
reports fish distribution in the Yampa from Craig, Colorado, to its mouth and Ifor
the l.ittle Snake for most of its Colorado passage. i
I

METHODS. Dolores Rh-er. Collecting was accomplished mainly with sei~lCs,
Olle 15 foot, VB in mesh and one 30 foot, % in mesh. Electrofishing was attem*ed
in the 100H~r section but \vas incffccti\'e due to high salt concentration, 'I
Collections were made at <eVt, rill points horn the riwl' mouth to Dolores, erlo-
rado, during July, 1971. Th.! river at that time carried high flo\\"s helow the nl<l~lth
of the San :\IIiguel, hut carric,d lo\\" flows in the middle section. The lower sectfon
was sampled again in late August-early September during low water. Fish wrre
retumed in all cases except fur one collection made near Cahone, Colorado, that +as
preserved for genetic studies. 1
I
I
I
I
I
I
i

'.''''-':''-'",,';'~'oA'

~~'-'..t....,,~ -.;;"'J".r.~'

lh
of
S.

II',
-1y
he

IW
'cc
ch

ng
ar

~r.
its

N
~

WYOMING

COLORADO

I
,
I
.'

"--1-, '---~-'---,

... --- ----....-'
I DINOSAUR NATIONAL
MONUMENT

I
I

o 20ml.
~~

Fig. 2.
