If caught, the tag
will indicate information like where it
came from and how much it has
increased in size. The program is sim-
ilar to one where veterinarians
implant microchips in dogs.

A win-win situation
Emerald Canyon's responsibilities
have been subtle yet significant. The
course continues to provide labor to
maintain the lakes, though a grant
assisted in the cost of attaching the

screens. Local Parker High School is
planning to develop an interpretive
kiosk on the golf course to tell the
community about efforts to assist
these endangered fish. In all, everyone
seems to agree that the results were
worth the effort.
"The project has been a success so
far," Benton says. "They have raised
fish to 12 inches long. The lakes have
produced results. We plan to continue
dOing it."
The Fish & Wildlife Service comes
out often to test the water and cap-
ture fish, but the staff at Emerald
Canyon has not been encumbered
with a tremendous amount of work
or restrictions. Aerators were installed
to help control algae, however.
"I'm happy with the project," says
Carrillo. "We have to maintain our
lakes in good condition for the fish.
We have a lot of algae and cattails,
but we do a mechanical cleanup - we
don't use any chemicals. We use some
trimmers to cut down the cattails and
rake them out, and we made a gigan-
tic rake to take out the algae."
"We're pleased that, as a golf course.
we're able to do something more for
the environment," Benton adds.
Minckley is also pleased that he
approached Emerald Canyon's staff
about the project. "It has been a good
rative effort," he says.
