The program is sim- <br />ilar to one where veterinarians <br />implant microchips in dogs. <br /> <br />A win-win situation <br />Emerald Canyon's responsibilities <br />have been subtle yet significant. The <br />course continues to provide labor to <br />maintain the lakes, though a grant <br />assisted in the cost of attaching the <br /> <br />screens. Local Parker High School is <br />planning to develop an interpretive <br />kiosk on the golf course to tell the <br />community about efforts to assist <br />these endangered fish. In all, everyone <br />seems to agree that the results were <br />worth the effort. <br />"The project has been a success so <br />far," Benton says. "They have raised <br />fish to 12 inches long. The lakes have <br />produced results. We plan to continue <br />dOing it." <br />The Fish & Wildlife Service comes <br />out often to test the water and cap- <br />ture fish, but the staff at Emerald <br />Canyon has not been encumbered <br />with a tremendous amount of work <br />or restrictions. Aerators were installed <br />to help control algae, however. <br />"I'm happy with the project," says <br />Carrillo. "We have to maintain our <br />lakes in good condition for the fish. <br />We have a lot of algae and cattails, <br />but we do a mechanical cleanup - we <br />don't use any chemicals. We use some <br />trimmers to cut down the cattails and <br />rake them out, and we made a gigan- <br />tic rake to take out the algae." <br />"We're pleased that, as a golf course. <br />we're able to do something more for <br />the environment," Benton adds. <br />Minckley is also pleased that he <br />approached Emerald Canyon's staff <br />about the project. "It has been a good <br />rative effort," he says.
