riverine fishes do not live in reservoirs. The eradication programs
did little more than give exotic species a head start on game fishes.
Where native riverine fish were not eradicated, they probably acted
as a buffer against the buildup of unwanted species, allowing
planted game fish populations a,chance to become established. The
downstream effects of eradication programs may create similar
conditions in tailwaters, essentially leaving the habitat wide open
for opportunistic exotic species.

CONCLUSIONS

As a concluding remark, it must be said that regulation of
streams has had an enormous detrimental impact on riverine fishes,
especially those species that require flowing water. The greatest
impact is usually in those species that are fairly specialized,
especially if they have a narrow temperature tolerance. The need
in future research primarily revolves around predicting the effects
of stream regulation on target species. This involves two types of
studies. First, the habitat requirements of target species must be
determined in detail. Second" methods must be devised to predict
physical, chemical, and biological changes in rivers due to damming.
These kinds of data are necessary to predict impacts of regulation
and will be valuable in attempts to correct existing problems.
