Selenium Concentrations in the Escalante Wetlands
During 1993 (From cooper and Severn 1994b)

agricultural drainage waters which leached salts from Mancos
Shale and flow in a generally east to west direction in the
northern and southern portions of the area. Although selenium
did not occur in wetland waters, it is possible that the soils in
this area contain selenium in an insoluble form. This possible
soil contamination will require further investigation.

High concentrations of selenium may present some concerns with
regard to the potential of this site for enhancement of razorback
sucker habitat. Much attention has recently been placed on the
toxic effects of selenium on wildlife. High concentrations of
selenium on the study site could potentially impact the
reproductive success and larval survival of razorback suckers. A
summary of the potential effects of selenium on Green River
razorback suckers is found in Appendix 3. This plan presents
alternatives for reducing the impacts of selenium and suggests
further studies with regard to selenium toxicity.

Dissolved oxygen concentrations do not appear to present any
concerns at this site. Concentrations ranged from a hi~h of 23.8

26
