Table 18. Description of the transects used to describe the
hydraulic and habitat conditions present at the Quarry
study site on the Green River (RM 307.5 - 308.6)

Transect Description

1 The thalweg is on river left. A deep, straight run. Substrate is
almost exclusively sand with one cell onr~ver left containing
rubble. A large sandbar observed in 1986"had disappeared in 1987
as a result of shifting sands. The left bank is steep with dense
vegetation. The right bank is also vegetated but less steep.

2 The thalweg is on river left. A run with mostly sand/silt
substrate on river left and cobble on the extreme river right. A
large backwater on river left exists just below the transect. The
left bank is steep and vegetated. The right bank is sloping and
grassy.

3 A uniform run with sand/silt substrate on river left and
cobble/silt substrate on river right. The left bank is steep with
sparse vegetation. The right bank is terraced and sparsely
vegetated.

4 Represents a sand substrate with a cobble shoreline on river
right. A sandbar just below the water surface was apparent at a
flow of 5000 cfs; however, it did not appear at lower flows. Thus
causing a change in bottom profile. An irrigation pump located 30
yards upstream had no apparent effect on flows at this transect.
The left bank is steep and sparsely vegetated; the right bank is
sloping with little vegetation.

5 A run with sand substrate and an extensive cobble bank on river
right. The thalweg is located on river right. A steep bank,
devoid of vegetation on river left continues up river to transect
7. The right bank is sloping with little vegetation.

6 A uniform troughlike channel with cobble/silt on river left. The
main channel is located on river right and exhibits a sand
substrate. The right bank is sloping and vegetated with tamarisk
and Russian olive.

7 A deep run dominated by sand substrate in the channel center, a
cobble/boulder substrate on river left and a cobble shoreline on
river right. The right bank is sloping and densely vegetated.

30
