Table 7. Description of the transects used to describe hydraulic and habitat
conditions at the Ruple Ranch study site, Green River (RM 332.3 - RM
333.0).

Transect Description

1 and 2 Transect one is a good control for upstream transects.
Narrow channel containing runs of moderate depths and
velocities. Cobble and sand are the dominant substrates
with silt present near river left. The banks are sparsely
vegetated sandy soil that adjoin a wide alluvial floodplain
on river left and a sheer sandstone wall on river right.

3 A wide run with deep, slow moving water near the right bank.
A large cobble bar is exposed near the left bank at lower
flows. Silt/cobble is the most common substrate
combination. Steep vegetated banks adjoin the wide flood
plain on river left and a sheer sandstone wall on river
right.

4 and 5 Wide runs of moderate depth and velocity. Depths and
velocities are fairly uniform in this area. The dominant
substrate at both transects is cobble; sand and gravel are
also present. The banks are steep and sparsely vegetated.
The wide bottomland adjoins the left bank; the bank on river
right forms the base of a very steep hill formed by sheer
sandstone walls.

6 An excellent control. This is the narrowest transect and is
located downstream from a riffle. A deep pool with slow
moving water, it contains a variety of substrates. Cobbles,
sand, clay and silt are all present on this transect.
Steep, narrow, sandy and sparsely vegetated banks adjoin the
wide floodplain on river left and the sheer sandstone wall
on river right.

18
