.

taxa represented and relative abundance of species. This was no doubt

.

due to various spawning times of the fish species and possibly different

dispersal mechanisms used by the various species. It appeared that

Colorado squawfish larvae should have used available backwater habitats

.

in the White River. Their absence from larval fish collections may

indicate no successful reproduction occurred in the White River in 1982,

reproduction was low and the few fish present were missed during our

.

sampling or they avoid backwaters in the White River and migrate into the

Green River.

Systematic seining for YOY fish in October produced only five

.

species. Their order of abundance in net collections was red shiner

(most abundant), flannelmouth sucker, round tail chub, speckled dace, and

bluehead sucker. No YOY or juvenile Colorado squawfish were taken.

.

Physical Measurement (PHABSIM) of the Suspected Spawning
Site Using Standard IFG-4 Techniques

Cobble/rubble habitat near RM 35 of the White River was examined in

1982 because it was thought to be a potential spawning area for Colorado

.

squawfish. In July 1980, FWS personnel recorded a radiotelemetered

squawfish exhibiting apparent spawning behavior in a riffle near RM 35

(Miller et ale 1982a). Consequently, physical habitat information was

.

collected to evaluat~ flow requirements for Colorado squawfish at this

specific river location (Figure 12). Also, shown in Figure 12 are three

other study sites where physical habitat data were collected in 1981 and

.

reported by Prewitt et ale (1982) in Miller et ale (1982a).

.

31

.
