.

.

completed spawning in the White River. High water temperatures in the

White River and the date when the fish traveled from the White River into

the Green River suggests a post-spawning movement rather than a pre-

spawning movement. An unsuccessful attempt was made to recapture and

examine the condition of fish number 3093 on 29 July. After leaving the
White River fish number 3093 traveled up the Green River and remained in
an area 6 to 9 mi (9.7 to 14.5 km) above the mouth of the White River
through September.
Additional Colorado squawfish movement from the White River was
recorded by the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) in 1982. A Colorado
squawfish captured and tagged at RM 136 of the White River in September
1981 traveled 251.9 mi (405.4 km) to a confirmed spawning site (RM 17.2)
in the Yampa River where it was recaptured on 31 July 1982 (pers. comm.,
Ed Wick 1982, CDOW).

One squawfish captured in the Green River and implanted with a radio

transmitter by the FWS in 1982 entered the White River and was observed

at RM 12.8 on 24 June. It was last observed in the White River at RM 6.5

on 8 July and apparently moved back into the Green River shortly there-

after. It appeared to be a transient movement rather than a precondi-

tioned spawning migration into the White River.

Radiotelemetry of Colorado squawfish in the White River during 1982

documented extensive movement of fish from the White River into the Green

River during June. This movement appeared to be, at least partly,

related to spawning. Both the northern squawfish (Ptychocheilus

oregonensis) and the Sacramento squawfish (Ptychocheilus grandis) also

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

22

.
