The

depth each net fished was adjusted so combined they sampled the entire

water column.

Samples collected during each 1 hr period were placed in Whirl Pak

bags and preserved with 10 percent formalin. Larval fish were later

sorted from sample debris and placed in 5 percent formalin.

Hand seines were fished in backwaters of the White River during

August to qualitatively sample larval fish. Larval fish were preserved

in 5 percent formalin. Samples collected by drift netting and hand

seining were delivered to the Larval Fish Laboratory, Colorado State

University, Fort Collins, Colorado, for identification.

Young-of-the-year fish were collected in October by seining backwater

areas at 5 mi intervals from the Utah-Colorado state line to the

confluence of the White with the Green River. Fish were large enough at

this time to be identified by project personnel.

Physical habitat data (i.e., depth, velocity, and substrate

information) were collected in 1982 near RM 35 of the White River by FWS

personnel. Five transects were established at the site, from which three

data sets were obtained. Physical habitat data were taken at a high,

medium, and low flow on the descending limb of the hydrograph. Field

data were analyzed by FWS personnel using a physical habitat simulation

(PHABSIM) computer model (IFG-4) (Bovee and Milhous 1978; Milhous

et ale 1981; and Bovee 1982). Habitat suitability curves used for

spawning squawfish in this analysis were those reported by Prewitt et ale

(1982) in Miller et ale (1982a).

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

9

.
