"

Screen Design Options

Option A - Vertical Flat Plate Screens in Sin~le Line

General

This option involves the screen structure with vertical flat plate screens in a single line. This

arrangement is shown on Figure 3 in Appendix B and an example of this type of screen is shown

on Photo 4 in Appendix A. The structure will consist of a concrete slab on grade with concrete

walls. The structure invert in front of the screens is at E1.4672.6. The base of the screens are set

at El. 4673.6, one foot above the invert. This will provide a one foot depth to allow for silt

deposition. The minimum design depth on the screens is at El. 4679.6, which gives a minimum

six feet depth of flow on the screens. Sheet 6 in Appendix C shows the calculations for screen

size assuming an approach velocity of 0.5 fps. Selected for Option A are 23 screens, 10 feet long

by 8 feet tall. This will provide two feet of freeboard on the screens. The panels are made of

stainless steel perforated attached to a steel support frame. The panels are then attached to a

structural steel beam and column support system. An access platform is provided along the

length of the screens.

Two potential methods to clear the screen face of small debris are proposed. The standard

cleaning system consists of a trolley-mounted brush type cleaner. The brush is pulled across the

face of the screen by a small motor driven cable or chain drive. An example of this type of

system is shown on Photos 4 and 5 in Appendix A. A second but more expensive cleaning

method uses an Atlas Polar type brush cleaner. The same type of Atlas Polar equipment that

12

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
