OMW A Selenium Remediation Project-Final Environmental Assessment

14

One comment was received from a private individual. This comment asked about utilizing Salinity
Control Program Funding to desalinate water to meet international agreements with Mexico. The
comment also asked if selenium could be removed during desalination.

Response
The National Irrigation Water Quality Program (NIWQP) is a national program directed at
addressing water quality issues including both elevated salinity and selenium concentrations
resulting from irrigation. The NIWQP will be providing both the construction and maintenance
funding for the OMW A remediation project. .

Selenium can be removed during the desalination process, however the costs are significant.
During the initial development of alternatives for treatment of selenium for the OMW A,
development of a desalination facility was considered. Costs were estimated in the millions of
dollars and the alternative was eliminated because of enormous cost.

Distribution List

Appendix A contains the mailing list for the final EA.
