1. "Humpback" and Ilbonytail" chubs may be the same species.

Perhaps each type occupies somewhat different niches, each

type with differing morphological expressions.

Before tne

impact of man, there may have been intraspecific expression

of alternative fast-water adapted forms and possibly

selection against intermediate types such that only "bony-

tail" and "humpback" tyPp.s occurred in the river'.

Hith a

changed selectional regime on account of altered river para-

meters, the single species may now consist of intermediates

except in the few areas where environmental parameters are

little unchanged.

Extensive morphological variation may

h3ve always been present but missed by due to the lack of

adequate study.

8xtreme forms (i.e., bony tail and ~umpback

chubs) would have been most obvious with some intermedi~te

types possibly misidentified as roundtail chubs (See
Appendix 1).

2. The roundtail. bony tail and humpback chubs origin2l1y

comprised three biological species.

Within species varia-

tion has never been thoroughly examined so perceived

intergradation is not understood.. One or more species may

be morphologically quite variable, this variability perhaps
affected by modification of the Colorado River system.

Perh3ps the bony tail and humpback chubs are recently

diverged sister species with incomplete reproductive

10
