flows, then is the remaining 60 miles flooded
during high flows?

You state the purpose of restoring floodplain
habitats is to provide what native fish do not
currently have. The EA should explain the need
for acquisition of private lands if 60 miles of
shoreline and 112 sites are presently available for
public management.

This infonnation should be taken a step further to
show how floodplain restoration along with these
other management actions will help recover
endangered fish. If many of these management
activities do not occur simultaneously (e.g.,
nonnative fish control), we have no evidence to
suggest floodplain restoration activities alone will
help recover these fish.

8. Appendix E and F Scientific names should
either be underlined or italicized.

Category PE should be listed in the footnote.

To make the footnote of these two appendices
easier to read they should coincide with the
category listed in the table.

Also, we see no benefit in showing species with
existing or historic ranges outside the project area
and suggest these be deleted.

9. Statement "Larval razorback suckers were
reported to drift passively from spawning sites in
Lake Mohave" cannot be located or confinned in
Minckley et al. 1991.

10. A number of references listed in the reference
section are not listed in the text and a few
references cited in the text are not listed in the
reference section.

by approximately 7,000 to 10,000 cfs. Therefore,
the remaining 60 miles floods relatively
infrequently.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
'I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

.IBecause of reduced spring flows, the floodplain
does not flood as frequently or for as long a
duration. Breaching levees would be the most
cost -effective way of restoring some floodability,
to make the best use of existing flows. Most of
the levees are on private lands.

.I All listed actIVities are occurring
simultaneously, and post-activity monitoring is
evaluating results. In conjunction with the other
activities, floodplain restoration activities are
expected to "help" recover the fish. Language has
been added for clarification.

.I0k. Names have been italicized.

.lEach letter is defined in the footnote.

.lEach letter is defined in the footnote.

.IThe entire species' lists were included to
demonstrate that none were overlooked.

.IThe statement was mis-worded, and has been
clarified. Newly-hatched razorback larvae are
known to drift passively from spawning sites.

.IReferences cited in the text have been added to
the reference section. Since the reference section
is a bibliography, it includes literature cited in the
text as well as literature that is not cited.

IV - 10
