The Bureau of Land Management administers 48 million acres in the Colorado River Basin (Basin) above Imperial Dam, or 36 percent of the Basin's area. Of the 48 million, approximately 8 million acres contain saline soils. Soil salinities are usually greatest where surface geology reflects saline marine shales and annual precipitation averages less than 12 inches. In depositional settings, soil salinities may also be high, even though underlying geology is relatively nonsaline. 50
