Of the 48 <br />million, approximately 8 million acres contain saline soils. Soil salinities are usually <br />greatest where surface geology reflects saline marine shales and annual precipitation <br />averages less than 12 inches. In depositional settings, soil salinities may also be high, <br />even though underlying geology is relatively nonsaline. <br /> <br />50 <br />
