This Hltndbook suppleJl)ents.the requirements prescribed by
383 DM 15 and 43CFR Part 2, Subparts.A andB. The.Handbook
. estahlish~s Departmentwidepolicyand procedures for
. administering and implementing the, Freedom of I,nformation Act
(FOIA). It provides detailed guidance on when and how to. apply
the nine FOIA'exemptions and includes exampl~s of the.types of
i.nformationwhich may be withheld under eaoh..It also requires
bureaus and offices to establish control systems for tracking and
monitoring requests. All FOIA requests will be processed in,
accordancE" with the proceduz:es containec;1 therein. Use of this
Handbook and the applicability of its provi.sions are authorized
in 383 DM 15. Questions regarding the content of the Handbook
may he directed to the Bureau FOIA Officers or Coordinators, who
can also supply additional copies.
