ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This publication is the culmination of nearly a decade of work on early life stages of the
species covered. It builds upon descriptions and preliminary keys previously sponsored by the
Bureau of Land Management (United States, Colorado Office), Colorado Division of Wildlife
(former Non-Game Section), Colorado State University Experiment Station, Ecosystem
Research Institute (Logan, Utah), United States Fish and Wildlife Service (Colorado River
Fishery Project and Reno Fisheries Assistance Office), and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
Some text and data, and many illustrations were originally published in Snyder (1981, 1983a)
and Snyder and Muth (1988).

Developmental studies at the Larval Fish Laboratory have depended on the assistance and
cooperation of many individuals, including Colorado State University (CSU) students serving
as Larval Fish Laboratory volunteers or employees. Edmund Wick was responsible for
obtaining fertilized eggs and rearing developmental study series of many of the species studied.
Mark Castagneri, Al Davis, Gary Dean, Carol Jefferson, Philip Harrison, David Herbet, Jeff
Pearson, Dale Brown, and Keith Fulsos (Brown and Fulsos via summer CETA Youth Program)
assisted with culture or organization of collected specimens for study. James Barrowman, Lynn
Bjork, William Emerson, Lyndon Evans, Stephanie Salyer, and Edmund Wick assisted with
acquisition of morphometric and meristic data from hundreds of specimens. Timothy Hill, Jack
Piccolo, and Steven Platania cleared and stained some specimens. Steve Meismer, Jack
Ruppert, and Mark Williams assisted with editing of the keys.

Additional specimens were donated by or borrowed from William Hauser (Alaska
Department of Fish and Game, Anchorage), Philip Harrison (CSU), Arizona State University
Center for Environmental Studies (Tempe, via Daniel Langhorst and Paul Marsh), Bio/West
Inc. (Logan, Utah, via Paul Holden), Ecosystem Research Institute (Logan, Utah, via Richard
Valdez and John Carter), Utah Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (Utah State
University, Logan, via Timothy Modde and Neal Muirhead), Utah Division of Wildlife
Resources (Salt Lake City, via Randy Radant and Dennis Shirley), and United States Fish and
Wildlife Service: Colorado River Fish Project (Grand Junction, Colorado, and Vernal, Utah,
via Lynn Kaeding and Harold Tyus), Fisheries Assistance Office (Reno, Nevada via Donald
King and Gary Scoppetone), and Dexter National Fish Hatchery (New Mexico, via Roger
Hamman). Parental stock for white sucker culture was obtained from a local pond owned by
Louis Swift.

C. Lynn Bjork prepared original and all previously published drawings except as follows.
Selected drawings of Catostomus commersoni larvae were reproduced with permission from
Stewart (1926), Buynak and Mohr (1978), and Fuiman (1979, drawings by C. Komar Outlaw).
Drawings of adult suckers were reproduced with permission from Miller (1952, drawings by
William Brudon) and Behnke and Benson (1983, drawing by Doris Rust).

Colorado Division of Wildlife contract supervisors Patrick Martinez and Thomas Nesler
were extremely patient with our many delays and revisions. Anita Martinez, Kenneth Tiffan,
Maryann Snyder and Clarence Carlson reviewed draft manuscripts. Kevin Bestgen scrutinized
near fmal versions of the keys.

Facilities and secretarial support were provided by the Department of Fishery and Wildlife
Biology, College of Forestry and Natural Resources, CSu. Michael Dallwitz of CSIRO Division
of Entomology in Canberra, Australia, provided copies of DELTA system computer programs and manuals to aid key production. This manual was sponsored by the Colorado Division of
Wildlife, Endangered Fishes Investigations SE-3 and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Division
of Federal Aid.

vii
