The mine is operated by Utah <br />International and produces a high ash (22 percent), lo\v <br />sulfur (.68 percent) which has an average BTU content <br />of 8,600 BTUs per pound. Due to the high ash content of <br />the coal and the need for sulfur removal, the company is <br />spending large amounts of money on environmental controls. <br /> <br />The first three generating units are owned and operated by <br />Arizona Public Service Company (APS).
