I

(

(

..

Gila cypha, humpback chub
dorsal rays usually 9, but not infrequently 10
anal rays usually 10, but sometimes 9, so a C9unt of 9/10
can inspire some confidence if ,the profile is' right,
but you must depend on other. characters if the count
is 9/9 or 10/10, because it could still be a cypha.
head small in all dimensions, concave on top
profile with abrupt hump behind head except in jl1venile~
and oddballs that mayor may not be hybrids
caudal peduncle modestly slender, the ratio of its minimum
depth divided into the length of the dorsal or anal
fin base 2.2 to 3.2, usually 2.4 to 2.8.
all fins large, note especially the pectorals and. caudal
gill rakers 13 to 17, usually 14-16 (often a large nostril flap)
vertebrae 41-44 (not counting Weberian apparatus)
snout long and sometimes fleshy, overhanging short lower jaw

Hybrids may go either way. Those with roundtails have larger
heads and caudal peduncles, with large mouths and smaller fins.
Hybrids with bony tails have small heads, slender peduncles,
long, peduncles, and large fins. Hybrids are recognizeable by
the mixture of some intermediate characters and some clearly
typical for one of the parents. The nature of the hump and the
finray counts are not proof of anything by themselves.
