METHODS AND MATERIALS

Emphasis was placed on the most important game species in the
backwaters. These species included largemouth bass (Micropterus sal-
moides), blue gills (Lepomis macrochirus) I redear sunfish (Lepomis
microlophus) I and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Fish were col-
lected monthly, from November 1971 through October 1972. From Novem-
ber to March, fish were captured using six IS-meter experimental gill
nets, each having square mesh measurements ranging from 0.6 to S. 0
cm, and one 30-meter gill net with a single square mesh size of 3.8 cm.
During the remainder of the study, samples were collected by electo-
fishing, using an AC 4000-W I 33 amp, llS-V Kohler generator. All col-
lections were made at night.
