1''1 J1

218

SUrrrnarv

The presence of sc:rre very young squawf ish and hump tack chub in Cataract
canyon and upper Lake Pcwell 9Ug1eSts that some sfBWl'ling by these species occurs
in these areas. The presence of young endangered fish here also indicated that
fish p:ssibly drift into the area fran upstream to use it as a nursery. '!'he high
'turtnlence and turbidity as well as flews that ha\1e varied fran 20,000 to nearly
100,000 cfs have hindered our efforts considerably. Reprcxiuctive efforts bf
these fishes ff'a/ be occurring in whitewater areas where present sampling gear is
ineffective. For COlorcrlo squawfish, \..e plan to continue sampling suspected
sp3WI'ling areas with a variety of gear including drift nets in an effort to
capture recently hatched fish near spawning sites. For humpl:ack chub, efforts
will be ma:1e with a variety of gear, including angling, to locate concentrations
of alults and p:ssibly spawning sites. Angling has been used successfully for
locating alults in the Yanpa and Green rivers (Personal camnmication with H.M.
Tyus, EWS, Vernal, Utah, October 1986).

.J~

The rea:3er is cautioned that at this time, these data are preliminary. Twl
more years of investigations are planned for the Cataract Canyon area to enable
us to make ma.nagement recarmendations to preserve and pronate the recxNery of
these endangered fishes.

ACKNOIiLEDGEMENTS

'!his BIOft'EST investigation is being furrled by the Bureau of Reclamation
through Contract No. 6-GS-4Q-03980. The study was conducted IOOStly within
Canyonlands National Park and with the cooperation of the National Park Service.
BOR employees that assisted in data collection include Sharon Tully, Kirk
Lashmett and Jim Barton. BIO/WES'I' personnel that assisted include Bill Masslich
and Larry crist. Bob Muth of the Larval Fish Lalxlratory identified the larval
fish and logistical support was provided through a subcoritract with Tag-A-Long
Tours .

'--
