In the field, the spawning biology,
early life history, habitat selection and movements of the Northern
squawfish are under investigation on the Clearwater, St. Joe, artd
St. Maries Rivers in Idaho. Scuba diving is used extensively to observe
spawning activities, locate fish, identify habitat utilized and make
physical measurements.

,I

I

Fish are also collected using nets of various kinds. Some are
sacrificed to monitor maturation of subadults and the gonadal develop-
mentof adults. Data on food habits, habitat preferances, length-
weight and age-growth is being compiled.

Discussion

Many aspects of the hatchery-lab work are not far enough along to
. draw conclusions. The final reports are scheduled to be in by September 30,
1981, unless unforeseen circumstances interfere. We need to have
sufficient production of juvenile humpback chub and Colorado squawfish
eggs and fry this year for the laboratories to complete their work.
At this time, the prospects for this are still good.

I'm hopeful that the hatchery and lab work will continue after
CRFP is dissolved. For this phase of the project, when done, is only
a beginning.

Acknowledgements

The work on which this report is based on that of the laboratories
and hatcheries I've mentioned. Specif:icaJ Jy, I would like to thank
Dr. Ross Bulkley, Tamara Black, Richard Pimentel of Utah State Univer-
sity and Dr. Ted Bjornn, Dr. Jim Chacko, Dr. M. H. I also would like to express my appre-
ciation for the information and slides provided to me by Roger Hammen,
Willow Beach NFH, Arcadio Valdes, Utah FES and Theopolis Ins1ee,
Dexter NFH, whose help is essential to the success of the hatchery-
laboratory program.

j
i
1

116
