species suggests serious environmental problems related to habitat
suitability. A perpetuation of the same habitat conditions, if
marginal at present, would only result in the same gradual decline
of these species. Even in areas of high "concentration," habitat
conditions may be less than optimal. In this regards, we view an
acceleration of research efforts as the only potential for the
development of effective long-term protective practices. The pre-
sent apparent emphasis on monitoring to provide a "status quo" must
be accompanied by in-depth research on critical life history needs.
