~

e

e

3

'.

3. Correlate year class strength with long term turbidity,
temperature, and sediment data collected by the U.S.
Geological Survey
4. Learn what we can about the migration itself. Is it
triggered by water flow, temperature, turbidity, some other
factor, or a combination of factors?
5. Through observation, accumulate as much data as possible
concerning the welfare of this species
As a tool, I had planned to use ten sonic tags surgically inserted
into the abdominal cavity of the fish. This was to make it feasible
to follow individual fish to their favored habitat and spawning sites,
and to learn something of their migration. There was limited success
with two of the tagged fish. Four other tagged fish were lost immediately.
This technique was then abandoned.
Eventually, however, I was able to locate a site in Lily Park
about two miles above the confluence of the Little Snake River which

provided an opportunity for habitat description. It is a site which I

suspect is used for spawning. In three nights, August 6, 7 and 8, I
captured 13 squawfish, mostly mature. Unfortunately, we had apparently
missed the spawning. A fisherman told us that he had caught a
large squawfish with loose eggs about a week earlier. We found several
ripe males, but no ripe females. We did find suspected spent females.
I have mapped and described the physical characteristics of this site.
I have noted a tendency to find males in eddies and suspected females
to be in deeper pools.
The limited success of the two sonic tagged fish demonstrated that

the squawfish moves around a lot, but spe~dz mcst of ~ts time in

slower waters.
