investigation to determine the existence of sub-populations of trout during the
initial filling of the reservoir,

Results of these findings enabled fishery management biologists to develop a
concept of managing the reservoir as three separate units, rejecting the
philosophy of single reservoir management. Because of the complexities of the
three reservoirs-in-one and the large sample sizes necessary, a computer
program for age/growth was simultaneously developed through the Utah
Division as an aid in data handling.

Fish population data indicated that the Utah chub population was increasing at
an alarming rate. A study ofthis species was added as a Utah responsibili ty, The
objective of this study was to define life history processes and possible
management implications,

Because of the importance of the overall fishery complex upstream from
Flaming Gorge Reservoir, study assignments were also made to Wyoming for
the Green River upstream to and including Fontenelle Reservoir. Obligations
associated with development of aquatic vegetation were dropped because of
reservoir fluctuation,

Changes in personnel associated with the project, and the timely nature of the
findings, necessitated the prior publication of some data related to the
investigational objectives and delayed presentation of the other data, The
bibliography included as part of this paper allows identification of known
publications dealing with the Flaming Gorge Reservoir area during the period
under consideration, This is presented in addition to the following topics and
papers from the fisheries investigations by Utah and Wyoming, The reports and
papers have been published as separate discrete subjects available from each
state management agency.l There will also be a limited number of documents
prepared with all the following papers included for the convenience of persons
wishing the combined reports of all activities at Flaming Gorge Reservoir.

1. The limnological features of Flaming Gorge Reservoir are given in the paper
published by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources entitled
"Physico-chemical Limnology of Flaming Gorge Reservoir, 1963-1971."
2. Fisheries development results are planned as a report, which will include
creel census, harvest and yield, This report is to be a publication of the Utah
Division of Wildlife Resources.
3. The life history aspects of game fish which were most completely
investigated and selected for publication are incorporated in the Utah
Division of Wildlife Resources papers "Growth of Rainbow Trout in Flaming
Gorge Reservoir during the First Six Years of Impoundment" (Varley et al.
1971) and "The Ecology and Life History of Utah Chub in Flaming Gorge
Reservoir, Utah-Wyoming" (Varley and Livesay 1975); and the papers of
the Wyoming Fish and Game Department entitled "Fish Distribution and
Population Trends in Flaming Gorge Reservoir" (Wiley 1975), "The Diet of
Rainbow and Brown Trout from Flaming Gorge Reservoir 1964 through
1969" (Wiley and Varley 1975), and "Benthos: Flaming Gorge 1964 to 1966"
(Dufek 1974),
4, Two papers concerned with plankton development and character of the
reservoir and produced under the auspices of the Utah Division of Wildlife
Resources are: "Plankton Periodicity as Related to the Chemical, Physical

'State Offices: Fish Division, Wyoming Game & Fish Department, Cheyenne, Wyoming 82002
Fisheries Section, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, 1596 West North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah
84116

2
