<br />lands, and lhe remaining acres arc in grass and browse range-lands. harren areas, and
<br />urban and built-up areas. or the cropped land 1,622,000 acres are irrigated and 603.000
<br />acres arc dry cropland. The areas of alpine mountain peaks and barren and inaccessible
<br />land arc extensive while Ihe urhan and huilt-up area constitute less than I per cenl or the
<br />area.
<br />Nearly lwo-thirds of the land area is in public ownership under Federal and Stale
<br />administration. The remainder is privately owned, with slightly more Ihan half of this in
<br />ownership by corporal inns and individunls, and lhe remainder in Indian trihal or indi-
<br />vidual ownerships held in trusl hy the Bureau or Indian AITairs.
<br />MOSI of Ihe lands of the region are managed under multiple-use concept in order that
<br />the largest possible amounts or goods and services may be produced from lhe resource
<br />base. ConservRtion, including preservation of unique resources. is pracliced to proleclthe .
<br />resource hase rrom deierioralion in the course of development and production. Resource
<br />uses of Ihe rcgion includc crop proouc,ion, domestic livestock grn7.in!!. ouldoor recrea-
<br />tion, mineral production, timber production, and the preservalion of wilderness and
<br />other public values. In addilion. land is used as Ihe site for induslrial development and
<br />olher occupancy. Forests cover approximalely one-third of the land area and contribute
<br />signillcantly to Ihe regional economy through water production, recreational use, ranch.
