Conclusion

Since the first European settlers arrived, Colorado's
system of water laws has encouraged cities, farmers
and other water users to take water out of rivers
and streams with little consideration for the rivers
themselves, As a result, too many of Colorado's rivers
run dry, to the detriment of local economies, fisheries,
and the environment.

,
,

Colorado's water system was designed to meet the
challenges of settling the West in the 19th Century.
Colorado must now adapt its water policies to meet
the demands of the 21st Century. This will require
using certain existing provisions of the law more
aggressively, but it will also require new tools to meet
the challenges of restoring rivers,

Sources of Information Used for this Report

American Sportfishing Association. 2000.
