Importance

This curious little species is one of the aberrant minnows found
only in the Bonneville Basin. It is of value as a natural predator of
mosquito larvae (Rees, 1945; Pendleton and Smart, 1954), al-
though its appetite for the wrigglers seems to be seasonal. Never-
theless, its increase and spread are to be encouraged within its
natural range, not only because of its feeding habits but to preserve
an interesting element of the native fauna. Unlike the introduced
western mosquito fish (Gambusia aUinis affinis), this species readily
tolerates the low temperatures of Utah's winters.

Range

The least chub occurs in streams near Salt Lake City and in
freshwater ponds and swamps around Great Salt Lake; it is also
known from Utah Lake, Beaver River. Parowan Creek, Clear Creek
and Provo River. The first specimens to be taken from Millard
County were collected from springs in Snake Valley, in 1942, by
C. L, L. C., and E. L. Hubbs.
