March 2008 EXTINCTION-PRONE TRAITS OF DESERT FISHES
biological characteristics. Failing to do so may provide
only a limited perspective for identifying extinction-
prone traits and may, in some cases, mask higher-order
synergisms among suites of traits, as suggested by
Davies et al. (2004). Moreover, there are likely multiple
means to an "extinction end" in the sense that species
with different trait combinations may be predisposed to
similar levels of risk to rarity, extirpation, and extinc-
tion. We cite the need for more research involving other
taxa and ecosystems that examines the manner in which
trait synergisms influence patterns and rates of popula-
tion decline, local extirpation, and global extinction.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
We thank Paul Angermeier, Michael Douglas, Kurt Fausch,
and two anonymous reviewers for their comments, and Bill
Fagan and colleagues for their published findings. We offer our
sincere appreciation to the following survey participants for
completing the questionnaire and for their dedicated conserva-
tion efforts in the Colorado River Basin: J. Brooks, T. Chart,
K. Christopherson, R. Clarkson, J. Deacon, J. Hawkins, P.
Holden, M. Hudson, P. Marsh, P. Martinez, C. McAda, G.
Mueller, T. Nesler, D. Propst, J. Rinne, J. Sjoberg, M.
Trammell, H. Tyus, P. Unmack, and R. Valdez. Funding for
this research was provided by the USGS Lower Colorado River
Basin Aquatic GAP Program to J. D. Olden, a U.S. EPA STAR
Grant ##R828636 to N. L. Poff, and the Upper Colorado River
Recovery Program for Endangered Fishes to K. R. Bestgen.
J. D. Olden conceived and developed the idea for the
manuscript, J. D. Olden and K. R. Bestgen assembled the trait
database, J. D. Olden conducted the data analysis, and J. D.
Olden, N. L. Poff, and K. R. Bestgen wrote the manuscript.
