ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This symposium would not have been possible without the financial support of the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This support
and the cooperation of the South Carolina Department of Water Resources and South
Carolina Sea Grant Consortium who hosted the symposium is gratefully acknowledged.
Several individuals deserve special recognition. Margaret Davidson of the South
Carolina Sea Grant Consortium played a major role with onsite logistics as well as helping
to pull the program together. Orville Magoon and his staff from Coastal Zone '89 (which
immediately followed this symposium) provided friendly and invaluable cooperation at
every stage. John Clark and the University of Miami also helped publicize the program
and provided coordination with Coastal Zone '89. David Davis, Director of the E.P.A.
Office of Wetlands Protection, and his staff provided not only financial support and
suggestions for the program but logistical help of the sort that is so badly needed and
much appreciated with an endeavor of this size.
We also wish to thank our steering committee and representatives from other lands
who attended the symposium at considerable personal expense and rendered invaluable
assistance. Particular thanks is due Professor G.E. Hollis, London, who we pressed into
service at many points in the program; Pat Dugan from I.U.C.N. who supplied many
helpful comments and helped arrange speaker travel; and Dr. Max Finlayson, IWRB, for
his helpful suggestions and participation.
Finally, thanks is due the many excellent speakers who participated in the
symposium and patiently worked with us on their papers.
Your help is much appreciated.
Jon Kusler
Program Chairman
