58
Two hybrids involving threatened or endangered species were collected.
One individual of the Gila c ha-G. ele ans complex was collected at the
mouth of the White River. A flannelmouth x humpback sucker hybrid was col-
lected 52 mi (96 km) above the confluence with the Green River.
Six adult squawfish were captured and seven observed in the lower 12.2
mi (19.6 km) of the White River, another was captured 29.5 mi (55 km) from
the mouth, and another captured 42.3 mi (78 km) from the mouth. All fish
were captured in habitat reported to be preferred by squawfish. No conclu-
sions could be drawn concerning the sex, maturity or degree of ripeness of
the specimens. Extensive sampling of larval and juvenile squawfish habitat
was conducted but no young squawfish were found.
This is the first documented report of squawfish in the Utah portion of
the White River, and suggests that squawfish utilize major tributaries to the
Green River at least some of the time. The presence of Colorado squawfish
throughout the river confirms the U. S. Fish and Wildlife's evaluation of the
White River as "Value Class I: Highest-valued fishery resource".
Water quality data had little variation between stations in the upper
42 mi (76 km) of the river and was similar to that recorded by other agencies
for the previous 2 years.
