36
squawfish recovery team) but were able to avoid capture. Two other squawfish
were captured 29.5 mi (55 km) and 42.3 mi (78 km) above the confluence of the
Green River on 11ay 5, 1979 and June 6, 1979 respectively (Figure 20). This
is the first documented report of squawfish in the Utah portion of the White
River. As mentioned earlier, there are unsubstantiated reports of squawfish being
commonly caught in the 1940's from the White River at the bridge near Bonanza
(Seethaler, 1978). Squawfish have been commonly found in the Green River
near the confluence of the White River and several were observed or collected
in the upper White River in Colorado in the late 1960's (Everhart and May
1973; May, 1970). Prewitt et al. (1978) found two squawfish in the Colorado
portion of the White River (52 mi [84 km] upstream from the Utah border)
during 1977, a year of extreme drought. Squawfish were not collected by
surveys in the same areas the following year, a normal water year (D. Snyder,
Colorado State University, personal communication).
Seethaler (1978) characterized the fish as a "probing, wandering,
opportunist" which can be found throughout the Green and Colorado River and
adjacent waters in search of prey. A squawfish was recently found for the
first time in the San Rafael River, 5 mi (8 km) from the confluence with
the Green (McAda et al., 1977). Other recent captures of squawfish in tribu-
taries of the Green River include; five squawfish captured by the Ute Indians
in the Duchesne River at the mouth of the Uinta River in the spring of 1975
(Seethaler, 1978); several squawfish captured by the Colorado Squawfish Recovery
Team from Ashley Creek in May 1976 (Seethaler, 1978); over 630 squawfish
captured in the Yampa River, mostly the Lower Yampa Canyon, from 1968-77
(Holden, 1973; McAda and Seethaler, 1975; Seethaler, 1976; Seethaler et al.,
1976; Prewitt et al., 1975; Prewitt et al., 1978); and several squawfish
captured or observed in the Little Snake River during 1974-75 (Seethaler, 1978).
