EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In the Colorado and Gunnison rivers, riffle and run habitats were sampled for physical and
biological parameters during pre- and post-runofftime periods during 1994 and 1995. Within
the Colorado River, eleven separate strata were sampled. One stratum was sampled in the
Gunnison River. Significant temporal and spatial differences in physical and biological
parameters were found between sample periods and stratum for the Colorado River. The data
indicated that substrate parameters were the most interrelated factors in determining primary
and secondary producer biomass in run and riffle habitats. Furthermore, it was found that run
habitats contain the majority of surface area expressed as a percent of total wetted area and
that substrate conditions in runs may determine the overall productivity of the river. This
investigation represents a valuable first step toward determining the carrying capacity of the
Colorado pikeminnow in the upper Colorado and lower Gunnison rivers.
lx
