Environmental considerations are not always clear, especially
when anadromous fish are not as severely affected as they are for these four dams.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR DAM REMOVAL: A CURRENT EXAMPLE
Research studies on the Ocklawaha River, north-central Florida, are currently underway which are designed
to provide an environmental assessment of retention and removal alternatives for Rodman Dam (Figure 1).
The fate of this dam is extremely controversial in the state, and has been for over two decades. The suite of
studies and approach comprising this environmental assessment of alternatives is based both on the issues
surrounding this specific dam and the knowledge learned from the past and proposed dam removals
reviewed here. The Rodman Dam alternatives assessment approach is discussed here as a prototype for
future dam removal environmental assessments.
